The Writer’s Almanac: Quality Writing, Delivered Daily

Garrison Keillor has long been a favorite writer.

His novels and essays are undeniably witty, his characters superb, and he’s been writing the weekly Prairie Home Companion radio show for so many years that the depth of his imagination can’t be questioned.

For years, I’ve been listening to Internet broadcasts of his daily The Writer’s Almanac - a quick dose of poetry followed by brief biographies of the day’s famous writers.

The Writer's Almanac

Many of the stories are gripping; writers who toiled in obscurity and wrote books that were released in anonymity, only to become famous years later.

It’s either depressing or inspirational (depending on your perspective), but it’s always interesting.

I get the written version of the Writer’s Almanac delivered to my inbox every morning, but you can choose the podcast, or even get both via RSS feed.

  1. It’s so fun to hear a non-Minnesotan praising Garrison. Specifically Prairie Home Companion. I’ve always wondered if it was a funny outside of the midwest. Wow– how narrow minded does that sound? I second the praise of Writer’s Almanac.

  2. Big fan for years. My parents were raised in upstate New York, so the Upper Midwestern humor still hits home.
