It's a remarkable OS - I plugged it into an old, slow laptop which we gave to a friend's kid.

Unlike the XP OS that came with it, she hasn't mucked it up or mangled it yet. And no virus issues.

As of now, I have my work PC that’s in a Windows environment running Ubuntu…and to add, I converted all of my self written scripts and c# programs to run in a linux OS. I do need to run some VBA excel workbooks, so I do have XP loaded in a VM to take care of those tasks.
I also have Ubuntu loaded on my Dell laptop which came with Vista (it never saw the light of day!). I have become pretty fluent in Linux in this time, but far from a ‘pro’…I learn something new everyday.

The problem most people have is choosing the correct version, there are too many imo. Everyone who doesn't know much about Linux gets confused about what version to get, Ubunto and Mint are geared towards the desktop market.

It is, Neil?

For some reason I think Ubuntu is focused on the desktop, looking at their features page (http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/810features/) and their development focus, but surely you must know better than the creators themselves ;)

Remember Linux is purely geared towards server and programming applications because of its rock solid stability. But I've seen a few communities popping up that are totally focused on getting it onto desktops. I wouldn't recommend it as a writing platform if your business depends on it unless you already know it inside out, which most of us here don't.

Tom: As I noted in an earlier posts, those with specific software demands - software available only on Mac or Windows - need not apply. I've managed to largely avoid the driver issues, and think that people buying Linux pre-installed on a machine would experience pretty much the same issues as those who buy laptops and desktops preinstalled with Windows.

That said, I don't believe everyone should switch to Linux; I'm in something of a back-to-basics mode these days, and love the speed and streamlined interface. With so much of our software moving online, I wonder if the software availability issues will become less pressing.

And yes, there is the matter of a little attitude towards Microsoft - who long ago did some nasty shit to a good client.

Linux continues to own a big chunk of the Web server market, and yes, it seems to have gained a toehold in the netbook market - someting it's ideally suited for. I simply don't see it making big inroads into the desktop market, but the next ten years will prove to be very, very interesting ones in the computing world.

More specifically about software, it's lack of driver support put me off and inability to support all the applications i used to use (like dreamweaver etc). Made me switch back to windows :( Think ill go back on what i said in the other posts about it being suitable etc lol Its a whole different world. I think its better suited to hardcore programmers.

I agree - claiming OS superiority is a largely empty exercise. While the biggest barrier to Linux acceptance is probably its largely obsolete reputation for behind difficult to use, the larger barrier hidden behind the "usability" claim is the lack of software choices across multiple categories.

For example, I only know of a single linux WYWSIWYG html editor - which stopped working reliably after I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10. And the ongoing lack of a powerful Linux blog editor remains a sore spot.

With any luck, old ideas about the different operating systems will fade, but even after they do, the question of software availability will remain, and I admit to sometimes wishing someone would write a commercial blog editor for the open-source world of Linux.

@Tom, I like your willingness to both *try* something you didn't think would be very useful, and then to actually switch over to it when you found that it worked well for you.

I agree that there's no good way to say Linux is "better" than Windows. It's like claiming a size 10 shoe is "better" than another size. What's "better" is what fits your needs.

Linux (and in particular, Ubuntu's version of it) fits me quite well. I need word processing, and I need programming tools. The other stuff, while useful, isn't so crucial. Linux gives me these things.

If I needed to run certain special-purpose software (some accounting packages, for example), Windows might be my only choice. If I wanted to play advanced games, same thing. Windows does have its uses. But not for me.

Good job...
